Brown N White:  The Heart of Bona's Basketball

Set against the backdrop of massive disruption in college athletics today, Brown and White: The Heart of Bona’s Basketball, is the timeless story about the smallest NCAA division one college basketball program, St. Bonaventure, as it breaks through racial barriers rising to national prominence — achieving an undefeated regular season in ’68 (during one of the most turbulent times in our nation), reaching the Final Four, winning the NIT, taking Kentucky to double OT in the NCAA tournament, falling into national scandal, and ultimately, rebounding into national relevance.

Why Brown N White?

As my college English Professor and mentor, Dr. James "Big Daddy" Martini might say, "Show.  Don't tell."    Or as Saint Francis would say, "use words only when necessary."  Please watch Brown N White ...

Our research partner, SBU ARCHIVES, unearthed this telegram below whose significance is best understood when placed in historical context.

By 1967, the Kinzua dam erected on Seneca territory, displaced 600 Senecas from sacred land, the Vietnam War came to a boil, race riots erupted in 159 cities across the United States ... and the St. Bona's Brown Indians integrated basketball team posted a perfect 22-0 regular season record prompting this telegram arriving on campus March 22, 1968 from U.S. President Lyndon Johnson.  It was shared with elected student government leaders.

So many pieces of St. Bona's great achievements are yet to be told such as the 1968 Undefeated regular season Bonnies led by Captain Bill Butler.

Our vision is to ensure future graduates ensure they know what it means to be a Bonnie, yet there's more to our lofty ambitions when it comes to making a movie.  We want educators across the U.S. today to have the right tools to meet Gen Z (ages 14-22) needs fostering young minds to solve the problems of their time.  Our research shows this is the most social justice oriented cohort to come along since the 1960s ... and they like sports!  US historian for LBJ, Doris Kearns Goodwin, would agree the role of history is to inform future generations to help acquire the necessary skills to cultivate leadership, team work, resulting in building stronger communities.  Education is the great equalizer and behind Lyndon Johnson's 1965 Act of Higher Education.

In addition to airing nationally on PBS in 2025 we will employ an Impact Media campaign, host screenings across the country in partnership with our sponsors, SBU's 32 alumni chapters and a theater or classroom near you!
